Your First Shift
Base layout, the five console panels, and the two conditions that must both read 100% before a single byte can be downloaded.
What the base actually is
Alpha Root Base is a listening post, not a house. Everything in it exists to serve one loop: point a dish, catch a return, process the return, sell or file the result before the shift ends. The moment you stop treating the rooms as rooms and start treating them as stations on that loop, the layout stops being confusing.
You arrive with a set of powered systems, a bank of monitors, and a landscape that is deliberately larger than the playable chore list. The forest grid around the base holds the working infrastructure - dishes, transformers, radar towers - and those pieces are not decoration. If a radar tower goes down, the console stops giving you coordinates, and you will spend a long walk finding out why.
The five panels
The terminal in front of you is split into panels, and each one owns a different part of the loop. Coordinates handles where things are and whether your radar link is alive. Downloading handles the transfer of a detected return onto physical media. Playing handles the media you feed the machine. Calculations handles the arithmetic the job asks of you. Utilities collects the settings and housekeeping that do not belong anywhere else.
New players lose hours because they try to work the loop from a single panel. The panels are a sequence, not a menu: you get a coordinate from one, a download from the second, a verification from the third, and a number from the fourth. Treat them in that order and the console stops fighting you.
Two hundred percents
A signal cannot be acquired until two separate readings both sit at 100%. Detector status must be full, and download status must be full. They are independent: a perfect detector with a degraded download link will still refuse the transfer, and the console will not always explain which of the two is holding you up.
Before you blame the machinery, check both. This single rule accounts for most of the early confusion around why a locked signal will not move onto media.
First hour, in order
Walk the base once and note the dish controls, the transformer bank, the radar tower, and the terminal. Then take an empty tape to the scanner, run one sweep, and follow a single return all the way through the panels until it lands on media. Do not chase a second signal until the first one is physically in your hand - the loop is only learnable end to end.
Once that first file exists, the rest of the game is repetition with better numbers.
